Rose Marie Smith died on January 8, 2022 in the Benedictine residential community in Winona.

Rose Marie was born on May 26, 1927 in Winona to Marie Rose (Grams) and Frank Anthony Tushner. She attended St. John’s Catholic Grade School and graduated from Cathedral Girls Catholic High School, now Cotter High School, in 1945, and then attended the College of St. Teresa. In 1945 she was the first Winter Carnival Snow Queen in Winona.

On May 30, 1948, she married Arnold J. “Ted” Smith in St. John’s Catholic Church. They had three children together, Douglas, Kathy, and David.

She worked for 25 years as a secretary in the WSU student union.

She was a member of the Knights of Columbus Columbian Women, volunteered at St. Anne’s, was a parishioner of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, and served as Hospitality Secretary and Money Counter, Girl Scout, Medjugorje Prayer Group and Bible Study, Bridge, and A member of a special card club who has played for over 50 years.

Rose Marie was a world traveler and particularly enjoyed traveling to Europe and the cities where her great-grandparents in the Czech Republic came from. She loved sewing, knitting and crocheting.

Her parents precede her in death; Husband Ted; and her brothers James and Frank Tushner Jr.

She leaves behind her children Douglas (Elaine) Smith from Forest Lake, Minnesota, Kathy (Daniel) Bork from Lexington, Ky., Dr. Jason Smith, LC, Ms. Aaron Smith, LC, Stephanie (Nathan) Beheler, Paul Bork, Eliza (Robert) Burns, Maria Smithson, Kate Smithson, John Paul Smithson, and Madeline Smithson; Great-grandchildren, Claire and Ella Burns; Sister Barbara Tuzinski; Sister-in-law, Val Tushner; and nieces and nephews.

She loved her family and we love them!

Special thanks go to the employees of the Benedictine residential community in Winona and the Winona Health Hospice Care for the loving care of Rose Marie.

A visitation will take place on Friday, January 14, 2022 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., with funeral liturgy and rosary held at 7:30 p.m. at the Fawcett Junker Funeral Home in Winona.

The funeral mass will be held on Saturday, January 15, 2022 at 11 a.m. in the Catholic Church of St. John Nepomucene in Winona. The visitation begins at 10 a.m. Her grandsons Ms. Jason and Ms. Aaron Smith will officiate. She is buried in the Catholic Cemetery of St. Mary.
