Northbrook Knitters, Crocheters Keep Kids Warm This Winter

NORTHBROOK, IL – With a long history, members of the Northbrook Park District’s Knitting and Crocheting Group recently made their annual donation to Foster Children’s Pajama Drive. The group followed a call for pajamas, socks and gloves to help local foster children stay warm this winter.

“The effort and talent shown in the beautiful handcrafted items created by the [group] is noteworthy and much appreciated, “said Illinois Senator Julie Morrison, who started the campaign.” During this fundraising season, our community donated hundreds of pajamas to keep children in need warm this winter. “

According to a press release, the Northbrook Park District has partnered with the Northbrook Public Library on this endeavor. Morrison met with members of the group at the Northbrook Park District Center last month to thank them personally. She presented the group with a certificate of appreciation for the generous donation of handcrafted items.

This group is a free senior center member drop-in program comprised of creators who have knitted and crocheted since childhood to some who have only recently picked up the needles and hooks, according to the press release. The group always welcomes new members and often teaches beginners skills.

Phyllis Kosner, volunteer leader of the Knitting and Crocheting Group, said the group is low on yarn and needs help.

“If you knit and have leftover yarn, take it in here,” said Kosner. “We love leftovers, we do patchwork, we take parts and make blankets out of nothing and people are happy about it. If you don’t want to knit but want to donate, we are thrilled and grateful for gift cards to stores that sell yarn. “
Residents interested in joining the group or making a yarn donation can contact Northbrook Park District at 847-291-2995. The group meets weekly on Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Recreation Center, 3323 Walters Ave., Northbrook. Donations are also accepted at this location.
