YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (MyValleyTributes) – Madelyn Damiano, a lifelong resident of Youngstown, Ohio, passed away on Monday, January 3, 2022 at the age of 100, just weeks before her 101st birthday.
Her family and many friends all agreed that she was sharp and a real philistine.
She was born on January 30, 1921, to Anthony Saulino and Josephine Belligerrie (Bailey) Saulino.
Madelyn graduated from East High School in 1939, where she sang in school musicals and later studied singing and piano. She has sung in several choirs, including the Youngstown Symphony Chorus, St. Dominic’s Choir and Warren Music Club for 25 years. During this time she wrote and directed “Christmas with the McGillicuddys,” a play that was performed during the Christmas season in St. Dominic’s and many nursing homes in the area. She was also a piano teacher.
Madelyn was very active in the Democratic Party. She served on the committee for 57 years, which is the longest time anyone has served in the state of Ohio. She was the district leader of the 6th Ward and the 2013 Democratic Red Carpet Award winner. Madelyn was a devoted member of St. Dominic’s Church. In addition to her work in the choir, she was in the Rosary Club, the 3rd order, festival director and cave mother of the girl scouts for 12 years. She loved gardening, played cards, and won several ribbons at the Canfield Fair for knitting and crocheting over the years. In 2020, she was diagnosed with COVID-19 at the age of 99 and recovered after 65 days in the hospital and rehab facility.
She has two sons, Samuel, Jr. of Warren and Michael, Sr. of Youngstown; three grandchildren, Samuel III (Lisa) of Norfolk, VA, and Michael Jr. and Rachelle of Boardman, and many nieces and nephews. Her loving husband, Samuel Damiano, aged 62, and her brother Frank Damiano.
The family would like to thank all of the Glenellen staff for looking great after Madelyn. Special thanks also go to Diane and Ed Reese for their kindness.
Due to the ongoing pandemic, a commemorative mass will be held in St. Dominic’s Church at a later date.
