Crocheted holiday tree creates community in Berea

MADISON COUNTY, Ky. (LEX 18) – Little by little, a special tree has come together in downtown Berea.

On the corner of Chestnut and Broadway is a crocheted vacation wonder. The 12-foot-high tree consists of around 900 crocheted granny squares and has been an affair of the heart since February.

“There were young people who worked on it, you know people who had never crocheted before,” said Joy Gritton.

Joy Gritton’s idea was inspired by other communities and similar creations she saw in Europe. Jess Estridge with Berea Makerspace designed and created the metal tree frame.

Estridge said, “I’m happy that it’s finished and I’m happy that so many people can come together and work on it.”

From fundraising to crocheting in groups or individually at home, people from all walks of life have helped make this creation a reality. To create a community at a time that was difficult to achieve, which was the goal.

Gritton said, “Among the people who have worked on it, they have many different political beliefs, many different beliefs, we don’t necessarily see it as a Christian tree, we see it as a holiday tree. People of all different faiths. “

The tree will be the center of attention Friday night as it is lit for the city, but Gritton said it is already attracting a lot of attention from passers-by, some of whom don’t even call Berea home.

“It was just really beautiful. It’s really gratifying to see it bear fruit,” said Gritton.

Your creation to be proud of. Spread a smile, Christmas cheer, and a message of belonging to all who see it.

The opening tree lights will be on Friday, December 3rd at 6:30 p.m. on the corner of Chestnut and Broadway in Berea. Cookies and hot chocolate are served.

From fundraising to crocheting, 65 people and three organizations helped make this project possible. Around 1200 hours of volunteer work went into the tree.
