bernie sanders meme: Woman turns Bernie Sanders’ viral meme into a crochet doll, sells it for over $20,000

WASHINGTON: Bernie Sanders went from a hit meme to a nearly $ 20,000 crochet doll in less than a week.

After the Vermont Senator went viral on social media for his easy fashion choices on Inauguration Day with quirky brown gloves and an oversized olive coat, Tobey King began crocheting in Texas. She turned the sensational meme that had been trending for days into a crochet doll.

It sold for $ 20,300. Yes you’ve read correctly.

“It’s overwhelming because I knew that Bernie was trending because of this image and I already had a Bernie pattern and a Bernie doll. So I just got that and modified it super quick, ”said King.

But to recreate Sanders’ exact look that caught people’s eyes and laughed, it took King about seven hours of non-stop crocheting, on top of the time she had invested in designing it a year ago. And her attention to detail is evident, even the iconic mittens that stole the show on inauguration day.

“The mittens aren’t that heavy, it’s just a color change, a special stitch,” said King.

Tobey King talks to her crocheted Bernie Sanders doll as the bidding continues on eBay on Tuesday January 26, 2021 in Corpus Christi, Texas.

King, 46, initially posted photos of the 9-inch doll on her Instagram account and they received thousands of likes and comments. On Saturday, she posted the doll on eBay and auctioned it for $ 20,300, which said it will donate to Meals on Wheels America.

Your donation was inspired by Sanders, whose campaign created sweatshirts with the meme on them and donated 100% of the proceeds to Meals on Wheel in Vermont.

“This could be my goal; This is my new way, “said King. “This is a new way of helping people in ways that I’ve never been able to do before.”

King, who lives in Corpus Christi, Texas, said over 30,000 people have purchased their Sanders doll crochet pattern, which is available from her Etsy shop. She said she hoped Sanders would approve of her efforts.

“I really hope he thinks it’s cool and that I’m doing something good,” said King.

Bernie In A Corner: Senator’s Mittens Spark Meme Fest

Star of a meme

The U.S. President and Vice President’s inauguration ceremony on Wednesday was a high-profile, tingling affair, with Lady Gaga, JLo and young poet Amanda Gorman making powerful appearances. But it was Bernie Sanders who became the talk of the town without taking the stage, and that’s just a whole new level of cool.

At the non-social event, the 79-year-old Social Democrat sat cross-legged and fully flaunted mittens made of recycled wool on a chair away from the crowd. The open pose not only became an inspiration for many to let their creativity run free, but also found a name for it in the US media. “Grumpy Chic,” read the headlines.

The Vermont Senator may have been cold at the event, but his picture certainly heats the internet. Take a look at some of the best memes inspired by Sanders.
